ABSTRACT Predicting the future has been an interesting pursuit for humanity. The infinite possibilities of the future have aroused great curiosity in people. So, we have created our own worlds. Storytelling beginning with ancient mythologies has become science fiction in the modern world. The science fiction genre which is about scientific and technological developments that usually deal with outer space, especially in an imaginary future world or a fictional planet, is by definition insufficient to describe and include various fictional forms of modern literature. Speculative fiction which is suggested as an alternative to science fiction is an inclusive blanket term that primarily relies upon the possible future forms of humanity. Speculative fiction is not only a collective term involving genres like fantasy, science fiction, or horror but it also embraces the genres that don’t perfectly fit into science fiction and other non-mimetic genres. Speculative fiction differs from conventional science fiction with its involvement of the unlimited possibilities of reality and provides the reader with a fresh perspective to look at them from outside. It can be addressed as “the literature of what if?” Ursula K. Le Guin and J. G. Ballard mostly deal with the role of humanity and its inner world in the imaginary new environments they created. Even if these worlds through which we observe differences with the world we live in are realms of the impossible or the lands of the possible, they make us question the present situation. This study aims to present a comprehensive review of the term speculative fiction, and explore Ursula K. Le Guin and J. G. Ballard’s speculative fiction in the context of their imaginary environments through the following novels and short stories: The Dispossessed, The Lathe of Heaven, The Drowned World, “Billennium” and “Deep End”.

ÖZET Geleceği tahmin etmek insanlık için ilginç bir arayış olmuştur. Geleceğin sonsuz ihtimalleri insanda büyük bir merak uyandırmıştır. Bu yüzden de kendi dünyalarımızı yaratıyoruz. Antik mitolojilerle başlayan hikaye anlatıcılığı modern dünyada bilim kurgu halini almıştır. Özellikle hayali bir gelecek dünyasında veya kurgusal bir gezegende genellikle dış uzay ile ilgilenen bilimsel ve teknolojik gelişmeleri konu alan bilim kurgu türü, tanım olarak, modern edebiyatın çeşitli kurgusal formlarını tanımlamada ve içermekte yetersiz kalmaktadır. Bilim kurguya alternatif olarak önerilen spekülatif kurgu, öncelikle insanlığın gelecekteki olası biçimlerine dayanan kapsayıcı bir terimdir. Spekülatif kurgu yalnızca fantezi, bilim kurgu veya korku gibi türleri içeren kolektif bir terim değil, aynı zamanda bilimkurgu ve diğer mimetik olmayan türlere tam olarak uymayan türleri de kapsar. Spekülatif kurgu, gerçekliğin sınırsız olanaklarını içermesiyle geleneksel bilim kurgudan ayrılır ve okuyucuya bunlara dışarıdan bakması için yeni bir bakış açısı sağlar. Spekülatif kurgu “… olsa ne olurdu edebiyatı” olarak da ele alınabilir. Ursula K. Le Guin ve J. G. Ballard çoğunlukla yarattıkları hayali çevrelerde insanlığın ve onun iç dünyasının rolüyle ilgilenirler. İçinde yaşadığımız dünya ile farklılıkları gözlemlediğimiz bu dünyalar imkansızların alemleri ya da mümkün olanların toprakları olsalar bile mevcut durumu sorgulamamıza neden olurlar. Bu çalışma, spekülatif kurgu teriminin kapsamlı bir incelemesini sunmayı ve Ursula K. Le Guin ve JG Ballard'ın spekülatif kurgusunu, aşağıdaki romanlar ve kısa öyküler aracılığıyla hayali ortamları bağlamında incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır: Mülksüzler, Rüyanın Öte Yakası, Boğulmuş Dünya, "Billennium" ve "Derin Son".
