ÖZET Son birkaç on yılda, edebiyat eleştirisinde bazı önemli değişiklikler yaşandı. Diğer birçok çalışma alanındaki bilişsel dönüşle birlikte, edebiyat teorisi ve eleştirisi alanı da edebiyatın doğasına ilişkin soruları yanıtlamaya çalışma biçiminde paradigmatik bir değişiklik gördü. Edebiyat araştırmalarındaki bu paradigma değişimi bilişsel şiir bilimin ortaya çıkmasına yol açmıştır. Bilişsel şiir bilim uygulayıcıları, psikoloji, dilbilim ve biçembilim gibi alanlardaki yeni verileri edebiyat kuramına entegre ederek, edebi metinlerin yaratılması ve algılanması ile ilgili süreçleri anlamaya çalışırlar. Bu tez, bilişsel şiir bilimin düzyazıya uygulanabilirliğini göstermek ve Kurt Vonnegut'un Slaughterhouse Five'da kullandığı, romanı ana akım edebi gelenekten oldukça farklı kılan stratejileri ortaya çıkarmak için söz konusu romanı sırasıyla bilişsel şiirbilimde kullanılan metin dünyaları theorisi, figür-zemin teorisi ve şema-senaryo teorisiyle incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Tezin ilk bölümünde, bilişsel şiirbilimin temel ilkelerine kısa bir giriş yaptıktan sonra, bu üç teorinin her biri hakkında sırayla bilgi verilecek ve belirli tekniklerin edebi metinlerde kullanılmasının yarattığı etkiyi anlamak için bu teorilerin her birinin edebi metinlere nasıl uygulanacağı açıklanacaktır. Tezin ikinci bölümünde, Slaughterhouse Five yukarıda bahsedilen üç bilişsel şiirbilimsel teori ışığında hem dilsel hem de bağlamsal olarak incelenecek ve yorumlanacaktır.

ABSTRACT In the last few decades, literary criticism has undergone some significant changes. With the cognitive turn in many other disciplines of studies, the field of literary theory and criticism has also seen a paradigmatic change in the way it has tried to answer the questions related to the nature of literature. This paradigm shift in the study of literature has led to the emergence of cognitive poetics. By integrating insights from fields such as psychology, linguistics, and stylistics into literary theory, the practitioners of cognitive poetics try to understand the processes involved in the creation and reception of literary texts. This thesis aims to respectively apply text world theory, the theory figures and ground, and the theory of schemas and scripts which are used in cognitive poetics to Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five in order to both demonstrate the applicability of cognitive poetics to prose and reveal the strategies Vonnegut used in Slaughterhouse Five that make the novel highly deviant from the mainstream literary convention. In the first part of the thesis, after a brief introduction to the main tenets of cognitive poetics, each of these three theories will be reviewed successively. And, it will be elucidated how each of these theories can be utilized in order to understand the effect created by the application of certain techniques in literary texts. In the second part of the thesis, Slaughterhouse Five will be analyzed and interpreted both linguistically and contextually in the light of the aforementioned three cognitive poetic theories.
