ABSTRACT Ecology and dystopia can be counted among the most reflective genres in literature through which reader have the opportunity to see the consequences of human deeds on nature manifestly. Even though they are commonly analyzed as different branches of literary works, they can be regarded as the parts of an intermingled unity since they portrait the possible incidents in the near future caused by human action. In addition to that the relationship between ecology and dystopia makes it possible to identify and classify the contemporary novel better. In fact, this identification and classification make it easier to observe the impacts of the careless activities of human-centered life on earth. In that respect, this thesis offers a wide examination on the field of ecology and an in-depth research on the dystopia. Furthermore, this work will contribute to the field with brief and clear information on ecology and dystopia and their impact on fictionalization process. In other words, this study aims to put forward significant information on the effects of the relationship between ecology and dystopia on contemporary narrative. The influences of this link on the fictionalization process of the contemporary novel will be illustrated through four novels; The Windup Girl and The Water Knife by Paolo Bacigalupi, and The Drowned World and The Drought by J.G. Ballard. Finally, these books will be handled under these subtitles; character; human and nature, and setting; time and place.

ÖZET Ekoloji ve distopya okuyucunun insanın doğa üzerindeki yapıp ettiklerinin sonucunu görme fırsatı bulduğu ve bunu en iyi yansıtan edebi türler arasında sayılabilirler. Genellikle edebi eserlerin farklı dalları olarak değerlendirilmelerine rağmen, insane eliyle hazırlanmış muhtemel bir geleceği yansıttıkları için içiçe geçmiş bir bütünün parçaları olarak düşünülebilirler. Buna ek olarak ekoloji ve distopya arasındak iilişki çağdaş romanı tanımlamayı ve sınıflandırmayı muhtemel hale getirir. Bu tanımlama ve sınıflandırma insanmerkezci hayatın kritik gerçeklerinin etkilerini gözlemlemeyi kolaylaştırır. Bu bakımdan, tez ekoloji alanında geniş bir araştırma ve distopya ile ilgili derin bir çalışma sunmaktadır. Buna ek olarak, bu çalışma ekoloji, distopya ve bu iki türün kurgusallık üzerindeki etkisini kısa ve açık bir bilgi ile alana katkıda bulunacaktır. Başka bir deyişle, bu araştırma ekoloji ve distopyanın ilişkisinin günümüz yazını üzerindeki etkileri üzerine önemli bilgiler sunmayı amaçlamaktadır. Bu ilişkinin çağdaş yazının kurgusallığı üzerindeki nüfuzu dört tane kitap üzerinden örneklendirilecektir. Bunlar Paolo Bacigalupi'nin Kurma Kız ve Suda Bıçak İzleri, ve J. G. Ballard'ın The Drowned World ve The Drought adlı eserleridir. Bu romanlar bu alt başlıklar altında ele alınacaktır; insan ve doğa; mekan ve zaman.
